Serve as a legal advisor to the Foodservice and Food Merchandising business units of the company and one or more assigned business functions of the company (e.g., Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Finance, Information Technology, New Product Development, Procurement, Supply Chain or Sustainability).
Among other duties, an Assistant General Counsel will:
Provide day-to-day legal advice and support to the staff of the assigned business units and functions.
Draft and negotiate agreements with customers, suppliers and other external parties within the areas of responsibility of the assigned business units and functions.
Investigate and resolve legal disputes customers, suppliers and other external parties within the areas of responsibility of the assigned business units and functions.
Retain and supervise outside counsel and other legal consultants in providing legal advice and support for the assigned business units and functions in an area requiring legal expertise or resources not available within the company legal function.
Assist in supervising, mentoring and developing paralegals and other legal support staff in the company’s legal function. This position does not have direct reports.
Perform or assist on special projects as directed by the Deputy General Counsel or Chief Legal Officer (e.g., mergers, acquisitions or dispositions of business unit or assets; banking and finance; intercompany restructurings; etc.).
Education and Licenses:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from accredited four-year college or university.
Juris Doctor degree or equivalent from accredited law school.
Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Illinois.
At least 5 years of experience as a licensed attorney.
Relevant areas of experience include antitrust and trade regulation, banking and finance, compliance, contracts drafting and negotiation, commercial transactions, corporate governance, environmental, export controls, intellectual property, international transactions (particularly Canada, Mexico and countries in Asia and Europe), labor and employment, mergers and acquisitions, real estate and securities.
Experience in supervising and mentoring paralegals and other legal support staff.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proficient in MS Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, and Power Point).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills and the ability to communicate and influence at all levels within the organization.
Self-directed with the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment with multiple accountabilities and multiple internal business partners.
Strong analytical skills as well as organizational skills.
Skills in handling conflict resolution situations.

Fluency in Spanish is desirable but not required for this position.
